Aaj Tak's Ram Sethu

I must digress from usual Cricketing fare to another story which is related to India and Sri Lanka - specifically to the mythological bridge between India and Sri Lanka which Lord Rama's Simian Army built so that Rama's righteous might could descend on Ravana's Lanka. The Government, fresh from its bruising victory in the trust vote (i have no clue what to make of the cash for votes spectacle since all the MP's involved on all sides of that issue seem to be of dubious repute), is all set to revive the SethuSamudram Project.

While surfing the vast sea of TV Channels available to us as cable subscribers here in Bombay, i came across coverage of this story on NDTV as well as Times Now, and both used shipping related visuals, or satellite images of the Ram Sethu. Imagine my surprise then, when i came across Aaj Tak. This channel coolly produced visuals of individuals with tails and crowns and Gadas milling about, some industriously working away at constructing Rama's Grand Bridge to Lanka! It took me a while to realize that the Aaj Tak Channel was using visuals from one of the many Ramayana television production that we have had in India (minus the music!). Im posting this in part to confirm that my eyes were not playing tricks with me, and that this was indeed the visual accompanying Aaj Tak's coverage of the story.

It is not surprising then that the government has shelved Science and found a version of the Ramayana which says that Lord Rama actually destroyed the Sethu himself in order to pave the way for the project. Naturally the BJP is up in arms.

Maybe Aaj Tak has it right. Most news in India does deserve this kind of irreverent treatment (even though Aaj Tak's particular brand of irreverence may strike some as extreme). In the spirit of Aaj Tak's creative leaps, maybe the next debate should address the following question: What might Lord Rama have to say about the proposed Shipping Sethu? It might actually be less fractuous and infinitely more interesting, in the same vein as Mr. Lalu Prasad Yadav's vintage effort in Parliament during the Trust Vote debate.

Please tell me that Aaj Tak did actually have snippets of the Ramayana Serial accompanying its Sethusamudram story.

AAJ TAK the worst News Channel,Ndtv and Times Now The Best

If you have ever watched Tv in INDIA you would agree with my thinking.Accordind to me AajTak is the worst news channel.AajTak News channel shows everything except news.They mainly show bullshit stuff.They mainly show clips of repeat and forecoming programs of other channel.Other stuff they are concerned is with celebs.They show half hour programs on what celebs have bought,who is fighting with whom,who dates with whom etc.I have long list of rubbish stuff they show I will post it some other time.

The best news channels are Ndtv and Times Now.They are manily concerned with stuff they are associated i.e NEWS. Lets give 3 cheers to Ndtv and TimesNow.

Half-a-dozen reporters and cameramen from the national and the local media, including a woman journalist of a national TV channel were attacked by angry supporters of Asaram

Journalists on Friday were caught between the opposing factions while covering the Ahmedabad Bandh called in memory of the two minor boys who had died under mysterious circumstances at the Asaram Ashram gurukul.

Half-a-dozen reporters and cameramen from the national and the local media, including a woman journalist for a national TV channel were attacked by angry supporters of Asaram. A couple of journalists were held hostage in the Ashram as an irate mob of supporters damaged the broadcast vans of two national news channels —Times Now and IBN 7.

Kuldeepsinh Kaler, a photographer with the Gujarati daily Divya Bhaskar, who was taking pictures of Asaram Bapu's supporters beating up people who had called the bandh, was dragged inside the Ashram and beaten up for an hour. Kaler was later admitted to the Civil Hospital with severe injuries. "The attackers snatched Kaler's cellphone," said Pranav Dave, his colleague.

Gopi Maniyar, a correspondent with the national Hindi news channel AajTak was taken to SAL Hospital after she too was attacked by Ashram supporters. Times Now cameraman Maujudan Gadhvi was targeted by the same supporters and his camera was seized and smashed. In other incidents, ETV reporter Harsh Gajjar, TV9 cameraman and IBN7 OB Van engineer were also attacked. All the incidents happened outside the Asaram Bapu Ashram near Motera.

"The devotees inside turned upon us when they realised that we were filming them beating up people outside the Ashram. They kept on asking why you want to report against Asaram Bapu?” said Gopi.

She said the mob fled in an open truck, which came from the Ashram, after a police team reached the spot to rescue the battered and bruised mediapersons.

A cameraman from a local cable news network too was at the receiving end at Nirnaynagar, the residential neighbourhood of the two deceased boys, when a mob turned angry alleging that the media was being sympathetic to Asaram Bapu, said Monica Sharma, a journalist who was present on the spot.

NBA condemns attack on media in Ahmedabad

NEW DELHI: News Broadcasters Association (NBA) has condemned the attack on journalists and media persons who were covering the Ahmedabad bandh on 18 July. The bandh was called following the mysterious death of two boys residing in the ashram of religious guru Asaram Bapu.

NBA says, "With more than 15 journalists being seriously injured, channels like Aajtak, Times Now and TV 18’s OB vans and television equipments were damaged completely".

NBA President and Aajtak CEO G Krishnan said that journalists and media workers provide a service that is essential for any democratic society and keep the public informed. There can be no acceptable reason for attacking the men and women who help make possible the fundamental right of freedom of expression. And preventing journalists from performing their duties are violations of the freedoms enshrined in and guaranteed by the Constitution.

Krishnan has further urged the Chief Minister and Home Minister of Gujarat to restore law and order to ensure that journalists are allowed to perform their duties in a free and fearless manner. He hoped that the state administration would take action to book the culprits and would display that no individual or individuals are beyond the law of the land.

The supporters of spiritual guru Asaram Bapu assaulted media persons at a press conference called by Asaram Bapu's ashram. What triggered the attack were the unreciprocated questions over the deaths of two boys Dipesh Praful Vaghela (10), and his cousin Abhishek Shantilal Vaghela (11), whose bodies were found in the riverbed near the spiritual guru’s ashram on 6 July.

The ashram has been facing protests since then. In addition, several organisations had called for shutdown in Ahmedabad on 18 July to protest against the flawed investigation.
